Happy Christmas Movie Review
Much better than expected
The spirit of Christmas runs throughout this movie but it is spoken in quiet terms and is couched in a believable but tense family situation. The heart of the story is in the character of Kelly (played beautifully by Melanie Lynskey). She is married to Jeff whose sister, Jenny (again a fine performance by Anna Kendrick), comes to stay for an indefinite period of time after a breakup with her boyfriend. Kelly's patience and forgiveness are tested and it is her story arc that is the central metaphor in the film. The interesting catalyst of change that allows the three lead female characters to address issues of feminism, relationships, politics and careers is the writing of an erotic novel (this plot device plus the raw language make this a non-traditional Christmas film that is probably not appropriate for children). There is also a hilarious infant and a great in-home Tiki bar. The pacing is slow and considered. There is a documentary-like feel that draws the audience into the action, sort of like spending the holidays with acquaintances: warm and friendly but unfamiliar. The acting is superb. The dialog is improvised and fresh and the emotions are heartfelt. This is an adult Christmas movie with a refreshing lack of Christmas movie gloss. Highly recommend.
